5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) compounds occasionally exacerbate diarrhoea in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This is thought to be due to a secretory mechanism in most cases. This is a preliminary report of 28 patients with ulcerative colitis who we surgically treated with "J" pouch endorectal pull-through operation from 1978 to 1996.
